TerpAI

TerpAI is a powerful generative AI tool designed to usher in a new era of accessible and affordable artificial intelligence at the University of Maryland. Whether assisting with everyday tasks or serving as a thoughtful partner, Terp AI simplifies interactions across a diverse range of technologies to enrich and accelerate desired outcomes. From clarifying complex concepts to outlining key points in study guides and lesson plans, Terp AI streamlines decision-making, enhances analysis, and sparks creative brainstorming. With an intuitive interface, access to the latest models, and customizable knowledge integration patterns, Terp AI provides a gateway to highly personalized interactions.


What can it do?

  • Assist users using question and answer format - Provides detailed and accurate answers to a wide range of questions
  • Analyze images and files - Answer questions on information in chart and graphs (PDFs up to 50 pages, Word, Excel, and CSV), extract information from handwritten notes
  • Chat with voice -  Engages in voice-based interactions for a more natural user experience
  • Generate content - Creates blog posts, articles, and other forms of written content
  • Edit content - Improves the tone, style, and grammar of existing text
  • Summarize text - Condenses long passages of text into concise summaries
  • Translate text - Converts text into different languages
  • Brainstorm ideas - Helps users generate and develop new ideas
  • Assist with code - Helps users understand a code block and write code based on design mockups
  • Bing Search - Uses a Bing Search API to search the internet to provide answers

What can't it do?

  • TerpAI is not trained on UMD-specific data, so it does not have special insight when answering UMD-related questions. It responds with public information from its training data, like ChatGPT.
  • It cannot generate files of types outside .txt and .png formats.
  • It cannot currently generate video.

Is my data safe with TerpAI?

TerpAI is approved for up to Level 2, Moderate Risk data, based on the University of Maryland Data Classification Standard.

Any data you put into TerpAI will not be shared with other users or used to train the AI.

Please note that any queries that utilize internet search capabilities will allow data to leave the UMD Azure Tenant for processing in a 3rd party vendor's Azure Tenant.


Usage Limits

An individual's usage limit is about 750,000 words per day. The number of interactions per day will vary depending on the length and complexity of the questions and answers. Please note with TerpAI's access to Bing search your usage may vary. Below are some estimated details related to varied types of interactions:

When you near your usage limit for the day, an alert will appear at the bottom of your TerpAI window.

Once the usage limit is met, you may switch to a different TerpAI Agent by selecting Explore Agents on the upper left-hand side of the screen. The individual usage limit resets at 7 p.m. ET daily.

OpenAI GPT continues to deliver optimum performance in handling complex tasks and providing highly detailed responses. The mini versions offer a faster, more efficient experience, perfect for quick answers and lighter tasks, while still maintaining great quality. 

These usage limits are necessary to ensure that TerpAI is available as a shared resource for all university community members. If you are a power user, reach out to DIT's AI team at dit-ais@umd.edu, and they can help you find other available solutions.

Please note: When revisiting previous conversations, TerpAI will use a portion of your daily usage limit to recall the context of those discussions. Additionally, conversations are not shared or continued when switching between GPT systems.
