UMD Virtual Agent

The UMD Virtual Agent is a Generative AI (GenAI) chatbot. UMD Virtual Agents are an advanced type of artificial intelligence that uses machine learning, particularly natural language processing (NLP), to engage in human-like conversations. Unlike traditional rule-based chatbots, which rely on predefined scripts and responses, GenAI chatbots generate responses in real-time based on the context and content of the conversation. They learn from vast datasets and can adapt to a wide range of topics and queries, making them more flexible and capable of handling complex interactions.

Available Virtual Chatbot Agents

Virtual Study Assistant: Virtual Study Assistants are for specific university academic courses. Only a controlled list of users, such as students, professors, and TAs, can access this bot. Extra features like quiz mode, Panopto transcript/video indexing, and disabling the bot during tests are available.

Departmental Assistant: This can be created for a department or a smaller unit within a department. It can be internal or public-facing.

ChatGPT Enterprise

ChatGPT Enterprise at the University of Maryland empowers our faculty, staff, and students with the most advanced AI technology available from OpenAI. It offers significant advantages over ChatGPT Plus, including unlimited, high-speed access to the latest services, enterprise-grade security, up to twice the speed, and no usage limits. This ensures all data is fully encrypted and protected, while delivering faster response times and priority access to new features. Enhanced productivity connectors integrate university data sources like SharePoint, Google Drive, Google Calendar, Gmail, Box, Teams, and many other connectors directly into AI workflows for seamless institutional resource access. Whether you're analyzing complex datasets, generating content, or optimizing workflows, ChatGPT Enterprise at UMD is designed to help our community excel in an increasingly digital world.

To reduce the cost of access, ChatGPT licenses will be subsidized by the university through June 30, 2026, lowering the monthly cost from $30 to $20. Starting July 1, 2026, the cost will return to $30 per month.

For security purposes, certain restrictions apply to GPTs (custom versions of ChatGPT):

  • GPTs can only be shared with workspace members within UMD
  • Third-party GPTs created outside the UMD workspace are not allowed

Claude Pro

Claude Pro, offered by Anthropic, provides five times more usage than the free version, longer conversation limits, and priority access during busy periods. It is especially useful for researchers, developers, and others who work with complex data and need deep contextual analysis. Its emphasis on ethical AI makes it a strong fit for academic and research settings.

For those who need to work collaboratively, Anthropic offers the Claude Team plan, designed for organizations that want to coordinate their efforts and make use of Claude’s advanced AI models in a shared environment. Unlike the individual plan, the Team plan is built for groups, allowing them to create secure, dedicated projects where they can upload files and have the AI grounded in their specific context.

The Division of Information Technology (DIT) does not directly offer Claude Pro or the Claude Team plan. Faculty and staff should work with their department or unit director to obtain them through the departmental procurement process.

For more information, contact the DIT AI Solutions team: dit-ais@umd.edu.

Note: Claude Pro currently offers approximately 45 messages every 5 hours, but the limit may decrease in longer conversations involving large attachments. ChatGPT Enterprise has no message limit.
