AI Services from the Division of IT

TerpAI 

TerpAI is a powerful generative AI tool designed to usher in a new era of accessible and affordable artificial intelligence at the University of Maryland. Whether assisting with everyday tasks or serving as a thoughtful partner, Terp AI simplifies interactions across a diverse range of technologies to enrich and accelerate desired outcomes. From clarifying complex concepts to outlining key points in study guides and lesson plans, Terp AI streamlines decision-making, enhances analysis, and sparks creative brainstorming. With an intuitive interface, access to the latest models, and customizable knowledge integration patterns, Terp AI provides a gateway to highly personalized interactions.

UMD Virtual Agent 

The UMD Virtual Agent is a generative AI chatbot developed right here at the University, powered by advanced machine learning, natural language processing, and data science techniques that are rapidly rendering traditional keyword and text-based search systems obsolete. By deriving context and intent from conversations, the Virtual Agent elevates responses beyond the static replay of predefined scripts, enabling more refined, engaging, and human-like interactions. Trained on comprehensive datasets, the Virtual Agent demonstrates a broad depth of knowledge across a wide range of topics, making it more capable and resilient when handling unrehearsed and complex scenarios.

Available Virtual Chatbot Agents

Virtual Study Assistant: Virtual Study Assistants are virtual agents designed to transform classroom experiences by providing subject-specific support for course materials. Intended exclusively for academic use, these agents can be provisioned for seamless integration into learning environments such as Canvas. With features including Quiz Mode, Panopto video transcription and indexing, and instructor-controlled bot settings for assessments, Digital Study Assistants support students, assist teaching personnel and help reinforce learning outcomes.

Departmental Assistant: Departmental Assistants are virtual agents serving as a trusted information hub for specific departments and functional areas, curating the most up-to-date knowledge on documented procedures and providing reliable, streamlined access to both common and specialized inquiries. These virtual assistants can be provisioned for an entire department or a smaller unit and may be configured for private or public-facing use.

ChatGPT Enterprise 

ChatGPT Enterprise at UMD provides staff, faculty, and students with access to OpenAI’s frontier models, surpassing the Plus and Pro plans by offering enterprise-grade capabilities such as enhanced data privacy, unlimited high-throughput usage, and advanced administrative controls. In addition, features including Custom GPTs, extended context windows, and shared workspace management enable collaboration across the UMD community, encouraging the thoughtful discovery of use cases that combine prompts, actions, and institutional knowledge into cohesive, high-value solutions. By delivering SOC 2–level data protection, lower response times, and priority access to the latest features, community users are empowered to excel in the digital landscape and amplify tasks surrounding the generation, analysis, and optimization of information and processes.

Please note that to guarantee secure and responsible use of this community workspace, certain restrictions apply to the usage of any authorized ChatGPT Enterprise account at UMD:

  • GPTs can only be shared with workspace members within UMD
  • Third-party GPTs created outside the UMD workspace are not allowed
  • Connectors are available for specific productivity apps like Google Drive, Gmail, Calendar and Sharepoint.

NOTE: To reduce the cost of access, ChatGPT licenses will be subsidized by the university through June 30, 2026, lowering the monthly cost from $30 to $20. Starting July 1, 2026, the cost will return to $30 per month.

Perplexity Enterprise Pro

Perplexity Enterprise Pro is an AI-powered answer engine designed to support research, learning, and collaboration by delivering fast, reliable, and evidence-based responses complete with citations. By combining real-time internet search with secure internal knowledge access, Perplexity enables users to explore both public sources and campus-specific information, from academic literature to administrative policies, within a single streamlined experience. Available as a one-year pilot to UMD faculty and staff, Perplexity Enterprise Pro offers advanced research and writing capabilities that enhance teaching, scholarship, and administrative productivity while helping the University evaluate the value of AI-assisted research at scale.

NOTE: The initial 1-year trial period will be used to evaluate the effectiveness and overall value this offering. Throughout the trial, we plan to work closely with the campus community to understand how Perplexity AI benefits academic and administrative work.

Microsoft 365 Copilot

Microsoft Copilot is an AI-powered productivity assistant integrated deeply integrated within the Microsoft 365 environment and across Microsoft workplace applications. Embedded in M365 software suite including Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneDrive, Copilot helps users draft and refine content, analyze data, and surface insights from information in real time. By supporting everyday tasks and streamlining workflows, Copilot enables staff, faculty, and students to work more efficiently while maintaining alignment with enterprise security and data governance standards.

At UMD, Microsoft Copilot is available in licensed tiers that distinguish between web-based and work-grounded experiences. Copilot (Web) provides AI-assisted search and content generation grounded in public web data and is suited for general productivity and exploratory use. Copilot for Work extends these capabilities by securely grounding responses in a user’s Microsoft 365 tenant, allowing Copilot to reference organizational information while adhering to University data protection, compliance, and administrative controls. Availability of features may vary by license, role, and unit, and is managed in accordance with University IT policies.

Google Gemini

Google Gemini is an AI-powered productivity assistant integrated into Google Workspace, supporting how the UMD community creates, communicates, and collaborates across tools such as Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Meet. Powered by advanced Gemini models, it assists with tasks including drafting and refining emails and documents, summarizing meetings and conversations, generating presentations, analyzing data, and searching enterprise information. By embedding AI directly into everyday workflows, Gemini helps users reduce manual effort, improve clarity, and accelerate both routine and complex work.

Across Google Workspace, a range of AI-powered productivity features further enhance collaboration and efficiency. These include automated meeting notes and summaries in Google Meet, smart writing and content suggestions in Docs and Slides, formula generation and data insights in Sheets, and intelligent email drafting, organization, and prioritization in Gmail. Together, these tools help users stay organized, surface key information quickly, and maintain momentum across academic, research, and administrative tasks.

Complementing these capabilities, NotebookLM provides a focused research and knowledge workspace built on Gemini models. Within NotebookLM, users can upload source materials such as PDFs, Google Docs, and webpages, then engage in conversational queries to explore content, generate research outlines, draft references, and refine written work. The platform also supports a studio-style workflow that enables synthesis across multiple sources, helping users connect ideas, validate understanding, and produce structured outputs. Features such as audio overview generation further transform dense materials into accessible summaries, supporting deeper comprehension and flexible, on-the-go learning.

Other AI Solutions

Claude Pro

Claude Pro, developed by Anthropic, offers expanded usage limits, longer conversation contexts, and priority access, making it well suited for researchers, developers, and advanced users working with complex or data-intensive tasks. Known for its strong emphasis on ethical and responsible AI, Claude delivers deep contextual reasoning and analysis aligned with academic and research-focused environments.

For collaborative use, Claude Team extends these capabilities into a shared organizational setting, enabling groups to work within secure, dedicated projects grounded in their own files and institutional context. Designed for coordinated workflows and knowledge sharing, Claude Team supports collaborative exploration, analysis, and content development using Anthropic’s advanced AI models.

NOTE: The Division of Information Technology (DIT) does not directly offer Claude Pro or the Claude Team plan. Faculty and staff should work with their department or unit director to obtain them through the departmental procurement process.

Claude Pro currently allows roughly 45 messages per 5-hour window, with stricter limits in extended conversations or those containing large attachments. ChatGPT Enterprise imposes no message limit.
